If you are a fan of strategy RPGs then you are in for a real treat with this game here. What is really cool about this is that I do not feel you need to be familiar with the series in order to jump into this game. Just know going in that this is a game that is going to demand a great deal of attention from you and suck up all of your time.
A Tyrant With A Heart Of Gold
The story of the game is not one of the strongest aspects of it. The main character of the game is called Valvatorez and the main plot of Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten sees him standing up for what he feels is right to take down the person who is in charge of the underworld. It is not the most engaging story that I have encountered in an RPG, but there is more than enough here to keep you interested in what is going on.
You Look So Good To Me
Visually, Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten is a tremendous looking game. Even now, many years later this is a game that looks fantastic. It has an almost Saturday morning cartoon vibe to the visuals. This is a top down/isometric kind of game and it has some of the most amazing looking locations I have seen. The game also has some great storytelling cut scenes with some amazing video sequences and the dialogue is done with large character portraits. I really do feel that in terms of the visuals this is a great looking game. These impressive looks are backed up with a solid soundtrack and some great Japanese voice acting which I liked as it helped give the characters more personality.
Do You Have The Time?
If you look at screenshots or videos of Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, you will think that you have this game pegged right away. This is a turn-based strategy RPG and with that, it offers what you would expect. However, there is just so much to do in this game that it is not an exaggeration to say that you will get a couple of hundred hours of gameplay out of this. What really drives this game is the progression system. Not just improving your characters, but your gear as well.Each character has a ton of abilities (evlities) that can give them various advantages in battle as you play. There is also an item world system where you can improve the items in the game and this is huge! The way you can improve your items in this game is just crazy. I know it is a lot to take in, but once you start playing the game, it all falls into place.
I could not tell you how many hours I have put into this game over the years. Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten is a massive and I mean massive strategy RPG. The story may not be the strongest I have come across in an RPG. However, the gameplay is what is going to steal your life away with this game. It is so packed with content that when you first read about it, it can sound almost daunting. I highly recommend that you give it a try and do not be surprised if you are still playing this a year or so later!
