You just need to copy downloaded voice files to your device.
Instructions:
1. Save downloaded folder to your PC, for example in 'C:tomtomvoices'
2. Switch on your TomTom and connect it to the computer (USB cable)
3. Click the Windows Start logo at the bottom left of your screen, then click on 'My Computer' and you should see the your TomTom ( e.g. Devices with Removable Storage with a small icon). Double click on the icon and the TomTom's folder view will open.
4. If you have a folder labelled 'voices', double click it, otherwise you'll need to store you voice files in the root folder (the first folder you see, after following Step 3). PDA and pocket GPS users with TomTom software may need to copy saved files to folder mobile device/my documents
5. Copy any of the voice files from the folder ( all 3 files: CHK, BMP and VIF) and paste into the folder voices or tomtom root folder (i.e. copy all the files to that folder: data88.chk and data88.bmp and data88.vif).
6. You can save as many tomtom voices as you want.
7. After pasting the last voice wait about 30 seconds, and then remove your USB cable. Your tomtom will reboot and you will be able to activate selected voice.
To change a voice on your TomTom:
1. Tap the centre of the screen:
2. Tap 'Change Preferences '
3. Click the right arrow, three times.
4. Now select 'Change Voice'
5. Use the right and left buttons to scroll around your available voices.
Note to pocket GPS and PDA users with TomTom software:

- Hello, I just bought a Tom Tom and I know you can download voices for it such as Darth Vader or John Cleese. Some websites charge for this and others seem far to confusing for me.

If you follow the guide, scroll down the page to 'VARAK' post, this explains how to add the data and its meanings to your .vif file.
The speech marks aren't needed though.
If you do download one of the free samples, you'll need to rename the .vif file.
So instead of the 'Darth Vader' file being 'vs-DarthVader-76.vif', it should be 'data76.vif'.
When you edit an add datat the .vif file (by opening it up in NotePad, it should look like this:

Just make sure the 'data' figure matches the .chk number and both the .chk and .vif files have the same number.
Finally check the number when copied to your phone won't overwrite the files already there.
I used iFun Box (which is freeware) to transfer the files i-FunBox File Manager, Browser, Explorer, Transfer Tool for iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch via USB
You'll find the folder to transfer the .chk and .vif files (don't bother with the bmp image file) at:
iPhone -> User Applications -> UK - Ireland (or whichever map you're using) -> UK - Ireland (or whichever map you're using) -> Voices
You'll see a list of .chk and .vif files starting at 'data00'.
Just drag the 2 files from Windows Explorer into Voices folder.
Bob is you're Uncle, Fanny's your Aunt and Slim Dick's you're Cousin
But after you've messed around with all the voices, you'll still end up using the female default voice
